What To Wear For This S**tshow of a Summer
I had hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but here we are.
Look, I know weather chat is dull, and I won’t try to convince anyone otherwise, but where it crosses into fashion, well, that I can get involved with, quicker than you can say hold my trenchcoat…or something like that.
So until such times as the sun puts it’s hat on, comes to the party, lets itself be known, cuts us a break or just simply shines a bit more, I’ve put together a list of some pieces that pay homage to the season that the calendar thinks that we are in, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the great outdoors.
Fisherman sandals
The beautyBeaut of these is that they are toes in and feet covered, so don’t require pedicures, but still light airy and sandal-ly enough if we encounter a sun ambush. There are any amount of them out there - from ultra high end, to mid range like the All Saints version above, to the jelly style very inexpensive versions from ASOS - so check them out.
White cotton skirt
A good buy based on versatility alone. Lighter than a black alternative, and pairs equally well with trainers, as with sandals as with ballet flats. The dimensions work well with a big ol’tote bag, and top wise a vest or waistcoat under a light knit means you are covered in the event of an aforementioned sun ambush. H&M, Mango and Zara all have an offering, or check out ASOS full selection here.
Sweatshirts
If you HATE the thought of being forced to bring a coat anywhere for the next month or two – you are me. But it’s also not really an option to not have something to layer on in the event of a torrential downpour/typhoon. A sweatshirt brings a degree of nonchalance, informality, comfort to the situation, it forgives creases when thrown into a bag, and is easily tossed in the washing machine after you get soaked and start to smell like wet dog. I featured some H&M versions here, a while back (scroll, they are there!) which are simple and to the point, but please do enjoy the above selection also.
Bermuda/City Shorts
As a lovely reader pointed out, these are hard to adjust to. Especially so if you are blessed with the kind of legs that have facilitated easy wearing of bum skimming denim cut offs in recent years – you are not me. But style them well and these shorts are your friend. And by “well” I mean with anything from a jacket to a racer vest to my own preferred way – with an oversized shirt, as featured here. Personally, I prefer them with an unfussy heel, but see previous comment about my own unshapely legs – if you are so blessed, fill your boots flats.
I would push my pedal pusher/capri pant agenda here once again, but in the knowledge that people generally aren’t keen, I’ll spare you – but I will say I TOLD YOU SO in a month or two.
Pop of blue
Lastly, and because I never don’t have my eyes on the season ahead, a pop of blue. It WILL replace the pop of red trend from Autumn/Winter late last year, and WILL be around for a few seasons to come, so get on that early adopter train now. It’s worth it when you see a fellow fashion girly and you can give each other the same “we know the score” eyes.
As ever, please do let me know if you take heed of any of my suggestions. Next week I’m going to show a few of my purchases from the past few weeks – not very many, but a few goodies that I’m keen to share.
Really hope the weather doesn’t pivot and make this post redundant overnight….
Anyhow
Until Sunday
Big love
Una
