I’ve been rewatching The OC. I know, it’s not the coolest, but if you have been here for a while you already know that. With having had covid and all it has been a comforting watch. I have so many questions on it - Did Sandy Cohen initiate the big brown trend, pre-dating Cara Delevingne? Why the obsession with bagels? Where is Chino and does anything good ever happen there? But I’m reminded of mother’s frequent quip “Alright Una. Don’t make a thesis out of it”. So I won’t
The other thing that I noticed is is that Summer and Marissa are big advocates of the “jeans and a nice top” look. There’s a lot more to be said here, mainly about low rises, but I will leave that alone for today. The look made me think - it’s hard to get nice tops, isn’t it? Tops that elevate the look, make you look dressed up wihout looking like you’re not coming from work. So I went a-snooping and this is what I found.
Enjoy, and let me know if you buy. Forever delighted to know!
This is a great top. The material is luxurious and they haven’t scrimped on it, so it looks very rich. It is a rare one that looks great out for a meal at night, but it is also great with tailoring for the corporate world. Cos do a versions each season - I have a green from a previous year, and a black, which surprisingly I haven’t worn yet, butI’m quite sure that I will.
One for those blessed with a smaller chest but imagine dark denim, against these shades of blue in the height of summer, with an Aperol adding the pop of colour.
This top comes in more colours - special shout out to the jade green shade (may have purchased). I love the weight of the knit balanced against the exposed shoulder.
If we are dressing up light or mid blue denim for night time, not better way to do it with a black, and an exposed clavicle.
Everyone should own at least one sequin top and this ASOS one is the perfect keep in your wardrobe and wear forever piece. Also very, very fond of this Self Portrait one, which has featured here before - better with tailoring or black denim.
Not necessary very dressed up but jeans, a slogan T shirt and a blazer never doesn’t work. I picked up this one recently too, and it’s love.
This linen shirt, knotted at the waist, against the the texture of blue denim wide leg jeans, with a slick bun and statement earring. That’s it. That’s the look.
If the notion for something a little daring is upon you, but backless and halter necks seem like too much work due to the undergarment situation, this is the one you need to scratch the itch. Daring and classy is a hard balance to strike - this manages it.
A very, very grown up cool look. Size up always. People cooler than me leaver them untucked, but, and especially with jeans, I’d lean towards a high waist and tucked in, with collar up.
There is always a place in any wardrobe for a cami. Always. It is timeless piece, and I particularly appreciate the navy and black of this one - très chic.
Honorary mentions:
Just couldn’t stop myself, could I. But a Sequin X waistcoat, and off should balloon sleeve, a pop of leopard and crisp white knit cannot go unchecked.
So friends that is it for now - until Sunday, which will be my first post exclusively for paid subscribers. It is notary story but that of a close friend - the story of miscarriage from the male perspective, and ultimately how it precipitated him to grow up after years of living the playboy life.
I hope you enjoy.
Until then
Big Love
Una
