So. When I was doing a lot more in-person meetings, years ago now, a style hack I often relied upon was tonal dressing. Head to toe, in one shade. It is a look that gifts you a lot of bang for your buck as it requires very little consideration, and still looks put together and professional. Back in 2021, I saw Michelle Obama rocking it, and I don’t know if it was because we were starved of fashion content given the previous year’s events, but my burgundy love was established there and then.
Cut to this Autumn/Winter and there is no avoiding it, which is fine by me. Dandy in fact. With that in mind, here is what has caught my eye in terms of burgundy brilliance, merlot magnificence and winey wonders. I’ll stop now.
THE NECKLACE
This necklace is the the kind of thing that has strong potential to become an unsung hero in your wardrobe. For example, if you don’t really like burgundy, but aren’t one to shy away from a colour of the season, it is the perfect add. But then, in time, you’ll find yourself reaching for it to add a je ne sais quoi to all your white t-shirt looks. Only to discover that lo and behold, it looks excellent with a masculine shirt too. I have a version from years ago and it has served me very, very well on all these counts, and more.
THE FLAT SHOE
You’re going to say two things here: that these aren’t burgundy, and that there isn’t much to like. But to that I say they are burgundy! - I should know, I own. As for their simplicity - that is exactly where their beauty lies. No buckles, no imposing chelated soles and therefore they are timeless. Picture them with the same shade of sock and a bare leg, or perking up an all black ensemble. They are very similar to The Beryl Monde pair that Anna Newton from The Wardrobe Edit mentioned on her recent post - if you don’t follow her here, time you did.
THE CO-ORD
I feel like these are better in real life. The shade is perfection - looks so rich, but yet is so affordable. Stock moves quickly and so should you.
THE BAG
Once again, you’ll say that isn’t burgundy, but I promise you, having stroked, fondled and caressed this in the Covent Garden store (didn’t get kicked out but did draw some worried looks) that this is much more burgundy in real life. The quality is exquisite, and I while I appreciate that suede has limited wearability in this climate, this truly is a most beautiful, beautiful bag for anyone who throws caution to that particular (gale force) wind.
THE HEELS
Charlotte Leah Collins, a longterm girl crush and editor in chief at Sheer Luxe, recently wore an all grey ensemble on a trip to Paris. Slouchy wide trousers and an oversized grey knit, with a burgundy toe sticking out the bottom, and MON DIEU it was très chic. Recreate with these M&S lovelies - also works well with a burgundy tight, if you’re feeling so inclined.
THE BEAUTY BUYS
If it isn’t for you, or now is not the time for purchasing, there is still a way on jump aboard. Burgundy nails will never go out of style. Chanel “Rouge Noir” is rumoured to have been favoured by Coco Chanel herself. It might not be true, but it is still Chanel’s best selling nail shade since, well, forever. Finally, there is something about clean make up and a statement lip that always appeals, and if that is your bag NARS lip crayon in Endangered Red will tick that box.
As ever let me know if you have hit purchase on any of the above - forever keen to hear.
Back on Sunday with a deep and meaningful one.
Until then
Big love
Una

I adore that nail varnish and always wear it and I adore a one colour combo! Great recs. I think the handbag is fab but only from car to bar , you definitely could not walk outside with it for long before it is deluged!
I love that Chanel nail polish. I used to wear it all the time when I did my own nails’
